Nathan holds his Halloween themed terrarium. He is wearing a black shirt, has dark hair and glasses and is smiling. Next to him, sits Melissa, the owner of Sterner's Stems. She has blond hair and glasses and is also smiling.Finding the right fit can make all the difference, and for Nathan, that fit blossomed at Sterner’s Stems in downtown Allentown.

As a student participating in our Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) program while attending Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA), Nathan had the opportunity to explore different career paths through job shadowing experiences. His first placement at a barber shop helped him learn more about his interests, but he quickly realized it wasn’t the right match.

Then he was introduced to Melissa Sterner, owner of Sterner’s Stems, and everything clicked.
From day one, Nathan became part of the team. Melissa enjoys working with him and appreciates his positive attitude and willingness to help wherever needed. Nathan assists with weekly flower arrangement setups at a nearby restaurant and helps prepare supplies and materials for the terrarium planting events Melissa hosts at her shop.

Most importantly, Nathan discovered something he truly enjoys: working with plants and connecting with people.
Although Nathan graduated from high school in July, his story with Sterner’s Stems didn’t end there. He continues to stop by once a week to lend a hand, a clear sign of how much he values the work, the team, and the relationships he’s built.

Nathan’s journey is a wonderful reminder that meaningful employment experiences help students discover their strengths, build confidence, and find places where they belong. And if you ever meet Nathan, you’ll quickly understand why he’s such a valued member of the Sterner’s Stems family. His smile says it all.

Congratulations, Nathan! We’re proud of all you’ve accomplished and excited to see what comes next.
