Student Work Experience Places High Schoolers in Paid Internships
Via Student Work Experience is a new service that matches high school students with disabilities in paid internships in Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon and Monroe counties.
These internships allow students to learn new skills and earn a paycheck” but they provide so much more. Just ask Lehonna, a student completing her internship at Safe Harbor, an organization that offers services to people who are homeless and living in poverty.
“While working here, I gained self confidence that I didn’t really have before,” she said. “I enjoyed meeting new people, helping and socializing.”
More than 40 students participated in the launch of this service in the fall, and Via is accepting enrollments for the spring and summer. There is no cost to the student.
Via Student Work Experience offers quality training at employers like: Lehigh Valley Health Network, Safe Harbor, ABC Early Learning, Aramark at East Stroudsburg University, Fed Ex, Giant Food Stores, Great Wolf Lodge, K9 Proving Grounds, Lehigh University, Lowes, Martin Guitar, Sonic, TJ Maxx, Tractor Supply Co., and The Zoo Health Club.
“We are proud to be one of the work sites hosting Via Student Work Experience,” said Dr. Brian Nester, CEO of Lehigh Valley Health Network. “This grant allows us to have students with differing abilities and diagnoses work as part of our LVHN programs. Our three students, D’Angelo, Araceli and Daniel, are helping build and open our Veteran Health Program resource center at the School of Nursing building.”
Lehonna designed a flyer to advertise a workshop she held as part of her internship at Safe Harbor in Easton.
