What is inclusion as it relates to childcare?
Inclusion is allowing children the same choices and opportunities
that everybody has, regardless of disability. To be accepted
and appreciated for who they are; as a unique individual
with strengths and weaknesses.To be with friends who share
interested not disabilities. To be a welcomed participant
regardless of ability level. To have the opportunity to
facility because it is accessible and easy to use by everyone.
To make necessary changes to programming (adaptations, accommodations
and supports) so that all individuals can benefit equally
from the childcare experience, regardless of disability.
What makes inclusion work?
Inclusion works when teachers believe that all children can learn. Inclusion works when teachers become learners.
What is “person first“ language?
Talking about the person/child first, then their disability, Emphasizing abilities, not limitations.
How much and how long will each center receive onsite assistance?
Via’s Inclusion Specialists will remain with the center for as long as is needed. Once staff is trained and feel comfortable, Via staff will fade out. Via’s Children’s Supports Coordinator will continue to provide follow up services to the center. The childcare center will have ongoing access to contacting Via for additional staff support and training.
How much does Inclusive Childcare cost?
Via’s Inclusive Childcare program is funded through a grant by the United Way. The program is provided at no charge to childcare centers in the Lehigh Valley.
