Moravian Student Wins Design Contest for Marathon Shirt
May 6, 2010

The Lehigh Valley Health Network Marathon for Via BETHLEHEM, PA – The Lehigh Valley Health Network Marathon for Via reached out to students at Moravian College to put a new look on their race shirts.  Via enlisted the help and expertise of a graphics design class at Moravian to come up some new and exciting designs.

“I presented this project to my students as an opportunity to work on a real world assignment that will be produced and seen all over the Lehigh Valley,” said Chris Neyen, Moravian College graphic arts professor.

“I wanted them to see this as a design job and not just a class assignment.  I believe this created an air of seriousness that is perfect as a learning tool for these students.”

The winning design was submitted by Kristi Beisecker from Wellesley, MA, a junior at Moravian College majoring in graphic design.

“As graphic design students, understanding problem solving is paramount and this project presented a challenging set of criteria,” said Neyen.

“We need to incorporate several key elements but make the design fresh and appealing.  Facing the challenges of real work situations creates an exceptional learning experience.  I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of approaches and unique ways of messaging and imagery that were presented.  I just wanted to thank Via for this real world opportunity for the students of Moravian.”

More than 2,500 walkers and runners participated in the 2009 Lehigh Valley Health Network Marathon for Via supported by 450 volunteers.  This unique event features a five-person Team Relay, full and half Marathon, and 5K Walk.  The 26.2 mile course starts at Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest in Allentown and takes runners through the Lehigh Parkway to the Lehigh River Canal Towpath continuing through Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton.

The LVHN Marathon for Via is Sunday, September 12, 2010.  Registration for runners closes on August 13, 2010.  Walker registration continues right up through Sunday, September 12, 2010.  Volunteers are also needed for race day.  Volunteer, register or donate online at www.ViaNet.org.  Email or call with questions Via@ViaNet.org or 484-893-5389.
