Liberty High School  |  1958-61

Class of 1961, Liberty High School

Nitchmann Jr. High School (1955 – 1958)
3 years on the team, two as a starter. Won city championship 9th grade year. Learned the game under Danny Sylvester, coach of current Hall of Famers Billy Packer and Al Senavitis, and father of Hall of Famer Jody Sylvester.

Liberty High (1958 – 1961)
3 year starter under Johnny Howard. East Penn League and District 11 Champions in 1961. East Penn League Most Outstanding Player and second team All-State in 1961. Note, at that time All-State teams consisted of a 5 person 1st team, 5 person 2nd team, 5 person 3rd team and many Honorable Mention. Today All State is usually a listing of approximately 12 worthy players and a large list of Honorable Mention. Because of his versatility he was able to play guard as a sophomore, forward as a junior and center as a senior.

Davidson College (1961 – 1965)
Recruited by legendary coach Lefty Drisell. Davidson was a Top 10 Division 1 team in 1963-4 and 1964-5. Teammates Fred Hetzel and Dick Snyder were 1st team All-Americans, and Terry Holland became a very successful basketball coach at the University of Virginia. He was considered by some as the best 6th man in the South in 1964, and was named to the Southern Conference All-Academic Team in 1965.

Basketball is a game of super-stars and role players.
I believe his strongest asset was the ability to make contributions necessary to enable the teams he played on to succeed. His statistics were not outstanding, but the record of the teams on which he played were outstanding. He played on championship teams throughout his career, as both the super-star and a role player, and was able to accept either role and perform as required to enable the teams to succeed. Because of these accomplishments, I feel he is a worthy candidate to the Lehigh Valley Basketball Hall of Fame.
